A note on the update:
Things are running late this year, due primarily to the need to devote
time to things necessary for my attempt to get a law school
teaching position. Now that the job search is over, I will be
updating the departmental pages over the next couple of months.
However, I also took advantage of the delay to do look directly
at far more articles (to determine their precise subject matter), so I
think the accuracy of the survey has been improved this year over last
when this is combined with the increased information coming from
updates to the Philosophers Index, and more information being directly
accessible over the internet. The main change to note relates to
the rolling nature of the update. As American graduate philosophy
departments require much earlier applications than most foreign
departments, I decided to update this page on a "rolling" basis, rather
than wait until the entire survey is completed. That way
information on departments with early application deadlines can be made
available in time to be useful to prospective students. However,
I will leave on the page the old information for countries not yet
updated, so that information will still be available on those
countries. Non-updated entries are italicised, and all updates
are done by country (i.e. all American schools are updated at the same
time, all French schools are updated at the same time, etc.).
Obviously this list only includes
those
individuals picked out by the survey, and does not claim to include all
philosophers working in the specialties listed. The terms used to
described the specialties are applied very broadly. Philosophy of mind,
for example, also includes philosophical psychology, etc. Nonetheless,
it is obviously difficult to categorise the work of some philosophers,
so if you believe a particular philosopher is better placed in a
different category please let me know. If
you have any information on moves of other
faculty members listed on this page, I will be happy to add it here.
E-mail Tony Cole:
webmaster@philosophylists.info.
It needs to be reiterated that this
list is based on a survey of publications over a defined period (10
years for articles, 15 years for books). Thus, where an
individual has done important work on a subject outside that period,
but no longer actively works in that field, s/he will simply not be
listed under that specialty. This was a conscious decision, to
note those who are currently prominent in a given specialty.
However, this should not be taken to suggest that individuals such as
I've just described should be ignored by those considering graduate
study. Rather, potential graduate students simply need to confirm
for themselves if the individual in question still has an ongoing
interest in the field, despite the lack of publications, and so would
indeed be an effective advisor. People do, after all, move on in
their work, and even though someone was a major figure in a discipline
20 years ago, they may currently not be interested in it at all, and so
not know the current controversies and arguments.
A further note is necessary
regarding the "Critical Approaches" list.
There are individuals listed under other categories who also work on
"Critical" subjects (e.g. someone who takes a feminist approach to
philosopher of science). Those people have been listed under the
specialty that most accurately characterises their work. Only those who
work on "Critical" subjects as a direct area of research are listed
under that category. This may need to be changed in the future.
Listings for philosophers under
Modern and 20th Century Philosophy also include names for those
individuals on whom the
person in question works. These names are simply derived from
publications, and are only meant to present a short guide to the
general interests of each philosopher. For example, someone who works
on both Hegel and Fichte is likely to have a very different interest in
the Modern era than someone who works on both Kant and Frege. The
listings are, however, not meant to be definitive of the interests of
the philosophers included here. Moreover, while the fact that a given
philosopher is listed indicates the strength of her publishing record,
simply because she is listed as interested in Kant does not mean in
itself that she is more of a Kant expert than someone without such a
listing. It simply means she has published on him. Of course, where
only one name is listed, that will usually indicate that the
notable work that faculty member has done was on the philosopher
listed. It doesn't, however, mean they have no interest in or knowledge
of other Modern philosophers. In some cases the philosopher in question
publishes on broad questions in modern philosophy, and the Modern
philosopher listed serves merely as an example, not as a specialty. To determine the
specific interests of
philosophers listed you will, of course, have to research further
yourself. The inclusion of names in this category is simply intended to
help shorten the time you may need to spend researching to find someone
with the interests you are seeking. Naturally, if someone's work is
misleadingly described by the names given, let me know and I'll be
happy to alter the description.
The Nature of the Categories
Used Below
Some guidance needs to be
given on the categories below, as they are, of course, very
broad. Thus, while Paul Gilbert and Barry Smith have both done
notable work in metaphysics, their work bears little real relationship,
and individuals interested in the work of one of them will probably
find the work of the other completely unhelpful. However, broad
categorisations themselves are unavoidable in any attempt to reduce the
work of the broad variety of contemporary philosophers to a limited
number of categories. I will, therefore, make a couple of
specific notes on categories, to indicate what subjects are included.
Epistemology has been given a
broad range, to basically include anyone who has done prominent work on
knowledge and inquiry. Thus it includes not only analytic
epistemology, but also hermeneutics, in so far as the emphasis is
placed upon knowledge.
Similarly, Metaphysics includes not
just analytic metaphysics, but any inquiring into what does and does
not exist (excepting, of course, inquiries into the existence of God,
which fall under Philosophy of Religion). It also includes those
who work on free will as a metaphysical, rather than ethical, problem.
Phenomenology and Philosophical
Anthropology includes only those individuals doing in this area itself,
as opposed to those who do historical study of its proponents.
The latter are placed in 20th Century Continental Philosophy. In
addition, Phenomenology and Philosophical
Anthropology includes any individuals working in the
philosophy of history.
Philosophy of Mind includes not only
analytic philosophy of mind, but also cognitive science in so far as it
relates to traditional questions in the philosophy of mind, as well as
what is
sometimes called philosophical psychology, such as the study of
emotions.
Philosophy of Science includes
not just traditional philosophy of science, but also work on the
philosophy of economics or any of the other "soft" sciences.
The groupings made here could, of
course be challenged. However, as I've noted, some form of
grouping was necessary to make the information concise enough to be at
all digestible, and I believe these decisions are defensible.
Ultimately, then, while these categories will hopefully be helpful, you will need to verify for yourself if the work of any
particular individual is the kind of approach to the subject in
question that you are seeking.
