Graduate
Programs in History and Philosophy of Science
Survey Completed: January 2005
Although caveats were placed at
the beginning of the general listing of philosophy departments,
particular attention needs to be paid to the details of the
production of this list. I am not entirely convinced that the list is
useful enough to warrant its presence, however since I think it might
be helpful if used intelligently I decided to include it on the site.
Firstly, since my two (effective)
undergraduate majors were Philosophy and the History of Mathematics and
Science, I have a personal interest in the subject, but also believe in
the genuine importance of an understanding of the history of science
for good philosophy of science. Nonetheless, this list addresses solely
the philosophical strength of the programs listed, not their strength
in history. Basically, it evaluates these programs as though they were
"Philosophy of Science" programs, rather than HPS programs. It attempts
to indicate how suitable the various programs listed may be for someone
interested in the philosophy of science, but not interested in a
general philosophy program. Of course, many of the programs in
the list are truly only History of Science programs, with little or no
interest in philosophy. Hence, the fact that a program appears low in
the list may tell you nothing about its quality, but only that it is
simply not a philosophically-oriented program. This, of course, is
itself useful information, which is why such programs were included.
Secondly, the information from
which both
the general survey and this one are drawn is designed for philosophy in
general, not specifically philosophy of science. Hence a faculty member
may be listed as prominent even though his/her prominence is in a field
other than philosophy of science, so long as he/she is part of a
program listed below.
Next, I have not attempted to verify
that the faculty lists upon which I relied were completely up to date,
but instead have merely used those lists posted at the website of the History
of Science Society. I decided to do this because so many of the
programs listed below are indeed just programs, and not departments,
hence reliable information regarding faculty is much more difficult to
uncover. Consequently, you should compare current faculty lists with
those on the History of Science Society's website to determine how
reliable this survey may or may not be for any given department. I have
also not included Philosophy of Science departments that were included
in the regular Philosophy survey, as a subsection of a larger
Philosophy department.
I have listed the names of
philosophically prominent faculty members beside that of the program.
Where they were included in the survey, but have since left the
program, their name is included [thus]. Where I am aware that a
philosophically prominent faculty member has joined a program, I have
listed it +thus+.
As always, then, the information below
should serve only as a first step, to help direct further inquiries of
your own, and should not be seen as making any claim of definitiveness.
It is intended primarily to draw your attention to programs
of which you might otherwise be unaware. Any comments can be sent to
